Mapping Tools Virtual Workshop 2021

On 2 September 2021 we held the second annual workshop on the mapping tools project (libmapper and the surrounding tools). This year we had presentations and discussions covering:

• recent related projects and publications
• map expression syntax for supporting reducing over vectors, signal history, signal instances, and inputs to convergent maps.
• improving distribution via package managers
• using libmapper on embedded platforms including ESP32, Raspberry Pi, and Bela
• integration with the game engines Godot and Unity
• using MediaPipe as a libmapper source device
• implications of the upcoming MIDI 2.0 protocol for interfacing with commercial hardware and software
• proposals for future applications

T-Stick Concert Videos

The Input Devices and Music Interaction Lab has uploaded videos from a concert held in February 2020, in which participating composers from the CIRMMT T-Stick Music Creation Workshop presented their new works. The videos linked below show some of their amazing variety, including installation-like pieces in which the T-Stick is fixed to a stand, works for dancers, laptop ensembles, and interactive visuals.

Imaginez une nouvelle génération d’instruments de musique numériques. Ils se grefferaient au corps humain pour en devenir des extensions; ils réagiraient aux variations de mouvements et à toutes sortes d’autres paramètres de manipulation. Ils permettraient aux danseurs autant qu’aux musiciens d’agir en direct sur la partition musicale d’une œuvre chorégraphique. Cette vision futuriste se concrétise déjà dans les recherches que mènent la chorégraphe Isabelle Van Grimde et le compositeur Sean Ferguson avec le chercheur Marcelo Wanderley du Centre Interdisciplinaire de Recherche en Musique, Médias et Technologie (CIRMMT). S’inscrivant dans la continuité de la pièce Duo pour un violoncelle et un danseur, où la musique live était captée, transformée et spatialisée par les interprètes grâce à un instrument de musique baptisé le T-Stick, cette collaboration aboutira, en 2013, à la création d’une œuvre scénique intituléeLes Gestes. En attendant, l’équipe artistico-scientifique nous ouvre les portes de son laboratoire pour une présentation interactive des instruments en cours de développement; venez tester en personne les incroyables possibilités créatrices qu’offrent ces instruments d’avant-garde.

T-Stick Composition Workshops

The 2010 T-Stick Composition Workshops (2010TCW) bring together five composers (any nationality, all ages) to develop new live electroacoustic solos for the soprano t-stick digital musical instrument in collaboration with Canadian composer and digital instrumentalist, D. Andrew Stewart. Selected composers will work individually with D. A. Stewart, being introduced to the present-day modes of performance on the soprano t-stick. The workshops will focus on exploring musical and physical playing gestures and will also include the development of new playing techniques and sounds for the instrument. The outcome of the workshops will be five new solo works for the soprano t-stick. The works will be performed by D. Andrew Stewart in a series of Canadian concerts beginning in January, 2011.
